In its efforts to promote creativity and innovation among students, LG Electronics (M) Sdn Bhd is sponsoring RM20,000 worth of IT products for Universiti Malaya’s (UM) Engineering Invention ‘N’ Innovation Challenge (EINIC) 2007.

The winners will receive LG DVD writers, LG LCD monitors and LG thumb drives.

LG Electronics pledged the sponsorship at a ceremony held at the Universiti Malaya campus in Kuala Lumpur, attended by its managing director and CEO I.G. Kim and UM project adviser Prof Dr Mahmoud Moghavvemi.

Kim said: “We believe that it is important to encourage young inventors to think out of the box. This is the perfect opportunity for young inventors to display creativeness and, who knows, they might have a revolutionary idea that can make a difference in our lives.”

The competition is open to undergraduates and postgraduates from universities and colleges in South-East Asia.

EINIC is an annual event organised by UM to raise the standard in engineering within the Asean region.

The competition is supported by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, Malaysian Invention and Design Society, Institution of Engineering and Technology and Institution of Engineers, Malaysia.

The competition, which will take place on Feb 26 to 28, will be held at the university’s Dewan Tunku Chancellor. More than 40 teams have already signed up for it.

To encourage more entries, the university is holding a road show at universities and colleges. The competition is expected to attract over 60 entries.

Prof Dr Mahmoud said: “This year will be exciting as the entries we have seen so far are creative and uniquely designed.”
